Wellness Form offers a class Monday that seeks to help tofu-phobes overcome their fear of bean curd. Or, for those who don't fear tofu, it will also cover the types of commercially available tofu and share a couple of recipes. The class runs from 6-8 p.m.
In the department of vegan diversions during Gallery Hop, Rad Dog is slinging dogs at the Paradise Garage three year anniversary party. As the weather warms up, carts like Rad Dog will be out full time. Here's a chance to catch it early.

This Meatless Week: March 17, 2011
The main event in this meatless week is the Great American Meatout. Of course, there are seven days in this week, so try some of these other options to keep your week both active and vegetarian friendly.
You can kill two birds with one stone at the grand opening of Loving Hut in Reynoldsburg this week. Loving Hut is Central Ohio's newest vegan restaurant, and they have a grand opening Saturday afternoon. You can then join Mercy for Animals members Tuesday and distribute samples of Loving Hut fare in Downtown Columbus.
Or use the Meatout as an opportunity to sample restaurants. Start your week off with green vanilla or Irish cream chocolate cupcakes from Pattycake vegan bakery. Friday could be an opportunity to try the vegetarian menu at DeepWood. Jim at CMH Gourmand has secured Athens' favorite food cart, the Burrito Buggy at Byrne's Pub Saturday, giving Columbus residents who didn't go to Ohio University a chance to sample a tofu and black bean burrito from the approved Bobcat hangover cure wagon. Sunday, grab brunch at Whole World. Dirty Franks offers the Columbus special Monday nights, made up of the Ohioana dog, fries and a Frostop root beer for $5. Ask Alana's to whip you up a tasty vegan or vegetarian degustation Tuesday. Wrap the week up with friends at Hal and Al's, where you can chase vegan dinner with vegan beer.

This Meatless Week: March 3, 2011
Attention diners: It is Dine Originals Week (again)! There are $10, $20 and $30 meal deals all around town March 7-13. Check out the many menus, and plan on eating out seven days worth of lunches and dinners in some of Columbus' finest restaurants.
Outside the Dine Originals restaurants, Dragonfly has announced a format change. Weekdays will feature a casual menu, and weekends will offer a reservation-only super club. They are also planning to re-open On the Fly as a seasonal vegetable market.
On the subject of vegan TV, Cupcake Wars on the Food Network will feature two vegan bakers on Tuesday March 8 at 9 pm EST. Both C'est La V(egan) and Sticky Fingers will compete on the show without animal products. Last year, vegan baker Chloe Coscarelli won an episode of Cupcake Wars. This episode features the first vegan cupcake duel.

Loving Hut is supposed to have a soft opening this Saturday in Reynoldsburg (6559 E. Livingston Ave.). The vegan chain features an international menu that is different at every location.
Also on Saturday, the Columbus Vegan Meetup group is getting together at Starliner Diner in Hilliard. The kitschy diner makes great vegetarian and vegan Mexican, Cuban, Italian and American dishes.

This Meatless Week: February 17, 2011
The hottest destination for foodies this week is the Fiery Foods Festival at the North Market. Activities suitable for vegetarians this Saturday and Sunday include the guacamole contest, a hot sauce competition, a homemade salsa competition and a number of eating contests including hot peppers, hot cornbread and hot ice cream sundae. It should be a delicious opportunity to feel the burn.
As mentioned last week, Mercy for Animals is one of the participants at Whole Foods' Nickels for Nonprofits at the Lane Avenue location. You can donate a nickel to Mercy for Animals simply by bringing a reusable shopping bag to the store. The event is scheduled for Friday February 18.
The Wellness Forum is hosting a conference call where Chef Del Sroufe will introduce participants to seasonal winter stews Monday at 9 pm. Hearty meals have a way of warming the spirit in cold temperatures, and Chef Sroufe will serve up the requisite instructions.
Wednesday, Chef Sroufe is moving his talents over to the Hills Market, where, along with Wendy Gabriel, he will lead a class that instructs participants in preparing a seasonal three-course meal with wines.
Magdiale Wolmark of Dragonfly has been nominated for Best Chef in the Great Lakes region from the 2011 James Beard Awards (a.k.a. the Gourmet Oscars). While it isn't something happening this week, it is still a feather in the cap of Columbus' vegetarian dining scene.

It's Valentine's Day on Monday. It might not be too late for you to get reservations to celebrate your relationship with your special veggie somebody. If you really love them, take your sweetheart to Dragonfly, Alana's or DeepWood. If you have a burgeoning crush on them, take them to Northstar, Whole World, Starliner Diner or the North Market. If you want this dinner to be your last meal together, take your (soon-to-be-ex-)significant other to the Top Steakhouse.
Mercy for Animals is setting up a table at the Lane Avenue Whole Foods to fundraise via Nickels for Nonprofits and promote plant-based diets. Stop by and pick up a vegetarian starter kit or donate a nickel to MFA by simply bringing a reusable shopping bag.

The menu includes Riesling mock duck mu shu style, tofu 'egg' rolls, BBQ trumpet buns and dumplings in hot sour broth. Ring in the Chinese New Year in a delicious, healthy way or use the calendar as an excuse to be blown away by another special menu at Columbus' premiere vegan restaurant.

On Tuesday February 1, Chef Del Sroufe of Wellness Forum Foods is teaming up with Mercy for Animals to host a cooking demonstration which features quick and easy vegan meal preparations. The transition from an omnivorous kitchen to a vegan lifestyle might seem like a big change. Sroufe does a great job illustrating how simple and delicious vegan dining can be.
The event is free of charge at the Whetstone Public Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participants may also sample the food and are able to get a free vegetarian starter kit.

Based upon today's weather, this week should be as good as any to spend indoors. If you feel like braving the elements, there are a couple of places in Columbus for veggie people to come in out of the cold.
